Biomimetic Ceramic Onlays

Custom ceramic restorations that rebuild a damaged tooth while preserving as much of it as possible.

When a tooth is too damaged for a simple filling but still has healthy structure worth saving, an onlay sits in the middle ground. It rebuilds the part that's gone without cutting the tooth down for a full crown.

Biomimetic dentistry means restoring a tooth so it looks and behaves like the original. A ceramic onlay is bonded to the remaining tooth structure and shaped to match your natural bite, using tooth-colored materials chosen for biocompatibility rather than metal. The goal is a strong, lasting repair that keeps more of your own tooth intact.

FAQ

Questions, answered plainly.

Why can't you just do a filling?

I get this all the time, because so many holistic patients are nervous about onlays or crowns and assume a filling is the less invasive choice. Here's the honest answer: large fillings actually weaken teeth. They're meant to fill small, non-load-bearing areas. When you cover a large portion of a tooth with composite, it wears down over time, which flattens the tooth and changes your bite. An onlay covers and protects the chewing cusps instead, distributing bite pressure evenly. Ceramic is also more resistant to staining, plaque, and shrinkage. With excellent care an onlay can last 15 or more years, whereas a large composite filling may degrade, chip, or need replacing every 5 to 10 years.
